Long jumper Ko Ho-long believes his battle to make it to the Asian Games is not over despite winning with a personal best of 8.01 metres at the Hong Kong Athletics Championships on Sunday.
Ko posted his record on his fifth jump at Wan Chai Sports Ground, becoming just the second long jumper from the city to break the 8m mark.
“There is a so called ‘eight-metre club’ in long jump and I am so happy to have joined them,” Ko – who will turn 25 next month – said.
“This is the standard that you can consider yourself an Asian-level long jumper. To be honest, I have been so eager to reach this mark for quite a while, especially after I had a wind assisted 8.28m result ruled as a foul during a training camp in Europe last year.”

Ko’s previous best was 7.87m when he won the Thailand Open in November and he broke it twice in Wan Chai, posting 7.94m on his second jump.
“My family runs a restaurant and they closed the business on Sunday to come and support me. I am so grateful to them,” Ko said.
His result put him at the top of the list of Hong Kong long jumpers who are aiming to make it to the Asian Games in Hangzhou this summer. Hong Kong record holder Chan Ming-tai – who set a city best of 8.12m in 2016 – previously led the way with an 8.0m jump in Switzerland last summer.
Now based in France, Chan made a special return to the city for the Championships which offer an additional 100 world ranking points for winners. But he only managed a fourth-place finish with 7.79m, behind Jalen Rucker of Australia (7.94m) and youngster Lin Ming-fu (7.83m).

Only two athletes will represent Hong Kong in each event for the Asian Games. The Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates have already submitted an initial entry list to the Olympic Committee but will not confirm their squad until next month’s Taiwan Open.
Ko believes the healthy competition among local long jumpers pushed him to reach his new mark. “We are all good friends and always encourage each other. The battle to Hangzhou is still going on and it’s still a bit early to say anything,” he said.
Athletics officials, meanwhile, plan to send at least the same number of track and field athletes to the Asian Games in Hangzhou as the 24-strong squad sent to the Jakarta Games in 2018.
“We want to send both the men’s and women’s 4x100-metre relay teams to Hangzhou as we did for Jakarta,” association chairman Kwan Kee said.

“The team event is always an important element in a multi-sport Games, and we understand the Olympic Committee also want more team competitions for Hong Kong. If we can take the two relay teams to Hangzhou, we should be able to send at least the same number in the squad as five years ago.
“Our women’s relay team has five members who can finish the 100 metres under 12 seconds, while we only had one or two for Jakarta. If they can improve the baton exchanges, they can be quite strong in the event.”
The men’s relay team left for a training and competition camp in Australia immediately after the 100m event at Wan Chai, while the women’s team will stay in Hong Kong to train before the Taiwan Open.
