Angus Ng Ka-long claimed his long-awaited fifth badminton World Tour title by beating Li Shifeng of China in a marathon German Open final in Mulheim on Sunday.

Having overcome fellow Hongkonger Lee Cheuk-yiu in his penultimate match to reach the gold medal showdown of the Super 300 tournament, Ng came through in a tough final, prevailing 20-22, 21-18, 21-18 after a gruelling 85-minute battle.

The last time the 28-year-old lifted a title was three years ago, when he won the Thailand Masters after defeating Li on his way to the final.

World No 15 Ng made it to the final of that tournament again last month – losing to Lin Chun-Yi of Taiwan – as he began this season strongly, also reaching the semi-finals at the Indonesia Masters.

He might have clinched the silverware in Germany in more straightforward fashion, squandering two game points against Li at 20-18 in the first game and allowing the mainlander to take four points in a row to gain the early advantage.
