Middle-distance runner Kamran Khan hopes to soon break the city’s men’s 1,500 metres record after coming close at Saturday’s Hong Kong Athletics Series 2 at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground.
The 21-year-old finished fourth in a time of three minutes and 57.10 seconds, with Tomonori Yamaguchi winning the race in 3:46.40.
Yamaguchi was one of two Japanese runners specially invited to the race, in the hopes they could help push local runners to break the record, which has stood for decades.
His compatriot Taishi Ito was third in 3:52.97. Kristof Hornyik, an overseas exchange student at the University of Science and Technology, came second in 3:52.36.
It has been over half a century since Dave Gibson set the 1,500m Hong Kong record in a race in Manilla in 1972. The time of 3:55.6 has not been broken for so long that even the record holder described it “ridiculous” last year.
“The two Japanese runners were fast and could help but tactically I made a few mistakes,” said Khan, who did set a personal best with his time.

“I should have closed the gap against the leaders in the last 400 metres which I did. But I did not worry too much as I took today as a learning experience. Next time I can go a little faster and it’s [breaking the record] just a matter of time with more races to come.”
Born and raised in Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong student only raced three to four times in the event over the last couple of years because of Covid-19 restrictions.
“I could still get some training during the pandemic but there was little competition, which made it tough for the athletes,” he said. “I am still learning in the event and I know I can run faster if I can pace and position myself better.”
Khan will not have to wait too long before his next race in the Series 3, which will be held in early April, to be followed by the Hong Kong Championships in May.
The Association of Athletics Affiliates are already planning to invite more overseas competitors to their flagship event, to again help push local athletes.
Khan will race again on Sunday in the 800m on the second day of the Series, where he also has a chance to break the Hong Kong record of 1:52.17 set by Leung Tat-wai, with his personal best just 0.8s behind.
