The 24-athlete strong delegation returned from Tokyo with five medals – two silver and three bronze – to take their total haul to 131.

It may have been one down on the six medals of Rio five years ago, but there was still plenty to be proud of at their 13th appearance at the Games, with medals in table tennis, boccia and badminton in the sport’s first appearance at the Paralympics.

This was the first Games without a gold since Seoul 1988 and only the fifth Games at all with no gold, the previous three coming before Hong Kong won its first gold at the 1984 Games.

It also ended Hong Kong’s golden run of winning at least two gold medals at every Games since Barcelona 1992, with the Tokyo Games also the first without a wheelchair fencing medal.

Among the positives were several season’s bests for Hong Kong athletes, with Chan Yui-lam setting a Paralympic record in the women’s 100-metre butterfly, while the boccia pairs ended a 17-year wait for a medal.
