The Hong Kong Scottish coach-turned-director of rugby is set to become head coach of Nottingham in the English Championship, where he is considered a club legend from his playing days.

“When the offer came, it was gut-wrenching because both [the HKRU and Nottingham] are incredibly meaningful to me,” said Hammond, who spent 11 seasons at Nottingham, captaining them 236 times.

“But joining Nottingham and coaching in the Championship was a great chance for me to continue developing as a coach and to continue supporting the club I spent most of my career with. Having the opportunity to captain the club as a player and now being able to return as a coach was too hard to resist.”

Kiwi Hammond – or “Hammo” in Hong Kong rugby circles – arrived in the city in 2012 and quickly paved a way at Scottish as an influential and motivational rugby mind.

He served as Hong Kong 15s assistant coach to Leigh Jones and Andrew Hall in crucial Rugby World Cup qualifying campaigns; coach at the Global Rapid Rugby team South China Tigers; and coach at the now-axed Elite Rugby programme, before taking up the interim head coach role from Hall in April.
