Hong Kong Rugby Union: Leigh Jones set for Leicester Tigers general manager role
- The Welshman helped guide Hong Kong men’s 15s to new heights as head coach before assuming high performance roles
- National team prepping for Asia Rugby Championship ‘in safe hands’ and player transition ‘will be minimal’ assures Jones
Former Hong Kong men’s national team coach Leigh Jones is leaving the Hong Kong Rugby Union to become Leicester Tigers’ new general manager of rugby in May, both parties announced Tuesday evening.
“From a personal perspective, the opportunity to assume the general manager role with an organisation like Leicester Tigers does not come along often, and was one that I could not turn down. I am eager to take on this challenge and thankful for the encouragement I have received from present and former players, staff and board members at the Union at this time,” the 62-year-old Welshman said per an official press release.
Hall, who worked closely with Jones ahead of the transition, is in charge of Hong Kong’s Asia Rugby Championship campaign in June. Though the squad will be missing Jones’ invaluable expertise, the former Wales, Newport Gwent Dragons and Ebbw Vale coach is confident in their prospects. Hong Kong men’s is considered the second-best team in Asia – trailing only defending champions Japan.
