Former Hong Kong men’s national team coach Leigh Jones is leaving the Hong Kong Rugby Union to become Leicester Tigers’ new general manager of rugby in May, both parties announced Tuesday evening.

Jones – who concludes his capacity as general manager of rugby performance at the Union having also previously spearheaded the now-axed professional Elite Rugby Programme – said the prospect of managing in England’s top Premiership division was simply too enticing.

“From a personal perspective, the opportunity to assume the general manager role with an organisation like Leicester Tigers does not come along often, and was one that I could not turn down. I am eager to take on this challenge and thankful for the encouragement I have received from present and former players, staff and board members at the Union at this time,” the 62-year-old Welshman said per an official press release.

Jones leaves the Hong Kong set-up after joining more than a decade ago. He is widely considered to have brought Hong Kong men’s 15s rugby to new levels, notably helping to guide them to a 2018 Asia Rugby Championship win.

In 2014, he briefly took up a role alongside then-head coach Eddie Jones with the Japan national team, where was part of their stunning upset against South Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. He was replaced by incumbent coach Andrew Hall in 2018 to focus on the Union’s various high performance projects.

Hall, who worked closely with Jones ahead of the transition, is in charge of Hong Kong’s Asia Rugby Championship campaign in June. Though the squad will be missing Jones’ invaluable expertise, the former Wales, Newport Gwent Dragons and Ebbw Vale coach is confident in their prospects. Hong Kong men’s is considered the second-best team in Asia – trailing only defending champions Japan.
