Last season’s inaugural champions Energy Standard were outshone by the Cali Condors on day one at the Duna Arena in Budapest, where all of this truncated 2020 season has taken place because of the coronavirus pandemic.

While Haughey, Pernille Blume, Femke Heemskerk and Sarah Sjostrom kept up their unbeaten run in the women’s 4x100m freestyle, the champions’ dominance ended elsewhere.

Haughey led the 400m freestyle before a late surge from Cali Condors’ Hali Flickinger, who finished in 3:58.77 for a fourth win of the season over the distance.

“I like to control my own race. I try not to go out superfast because I know I have a good back end,” Flickinger said. “The way I train is showing in the pool and I’m getting the points.”

The points came the way of the Condors as they set three world records on Saturday with Condors star Caeleb Dressel setting short-course bests in the 100m butterfly and the 50m freestyle. Dressel leads the MVP rankings.
