South China captain Chan Wai-ho said the team had to put behind them the sudden departure of coach Casemiro Mior as they left Hong Kong on Sunday for a crucial AFC Cup tie.

The Caroliners, who have been struggling at home and overseas, will meet Maziya of Maldives in group G on Wednesday but Miro did not join the side at the airport.

It was later announced by the club they had parted ways with the Brazilian by “mutual agreement”.

Ricardo Rambo, who joined South China as assistant coach two weeks ago from Premier League rivals BC Rangers, was appointed caretaker manager.

Chan said he was shocked by the news prior to the pivotal regional cup tie, which they have to win after losing both of their opening AFC Cup games.

“It is quite surprising as this is news to me,” said Chan. “But Mior had already said before that the coach will be the first one to take responsibility if there is no result.
