It’s been one hell of a trip for Jack Martin: He claimed first place and a new course record at the Standard Chartered Marathon 10km race this morning after flying in from the UK a few days ago for business meetings.

His time of 31 minutes and 45 seconds was nine seconds faster than the record set by local runner Clinton Mackevicius in 2013 of 31 minutes and 54 seconds.
“He was so fast, even in the first kilometre we couldn’t catch him,” remarked second and third placed finishers Wong Tsz-to and Abraham Kok Yu-hang

With a 29 minute 30 second 10km personal best, the 27-year-old marketing assistant for Ronhill sportswear arrived with high expectations, despite the jetlag and workload.
“It’s always hard to say how you’ll go, but I’ve been in good form in the UK so I was hopeful I would finish high in the rankings.”
Aware the course was hilly, he was still surprised how much the undulations impacted his time. “I was off-pace by about 5 or 10 seconds every kilometre because of the hills – I found it quite tough.”
“There’s a few nice downhill stretches, but as soon as it went down it went up again.”

He shrugged off the treacherous weather – “I’m from Manchester, I’m used to running in the rain.
Wong and Kok, who finished in 33:16 and 33:48 respectively, are teammates from the Hong Kong national triathlon squad and said they worked together in the first half of the race to hunt Martin down, but admitted defeat early.
“He attacked right at the start, I think he was running under three minute 10 seconds in the first kilometre,” said Kok, 20. “So fast,” added Wong. Neither were aware Martin would be taking part.
Martin’s record-breaking performance was a blow for 17-year-old junior elite triathlete Wong: he finished first runner-up last year, but 17 seconds slower, and in much better conditions.

It was a stellar day for Hong Kong triathletes overall, with fellow teammates from the Hong Kong National Squad finishing close behind, including Michael Lam (4th) Yu Shing Him (6th) and ex-Olympian Daniel Lee (7th).
For Martin, the race was a mere warm-up ahead of the Berlin half-marathon in March. He planned to celebrate his win with “a bit of sightseeing and then maybe a meal and a beer,” he said. But no rest. “Oh no, no time for that.”
