Hong Kong’s Hilda Choi Yan-yin claimed her first ITU victory as an elite senior athlete in the Asian Triathlon Cup in Burabay, Kazakhstan, on Sunday.

Choi led home the woman’s field after a courageous solo breakaway during the bike leg, which was followed by an equally solid run to claim her maiden senior women’s elite title at Asian Cup level.

A jubilant Choi said: “I’m absolutely delighted with my first senior ITU title. I want to thank all those who had faith in me and supported me even after I faltered a little during the early part of the season.”

The Hong Kong triathlon squad has this year been working hard towards Rio Olympic qualification, and Choi’s impressive result is clear evidence that the team is on the right track.

Tim Law led the field on the swim section in the men’s elite race to create a 20-second gap between himself and a chasing pack of five athletes. He then elected to fall back at the beginning of the bike leg and into the first pack of athletes, which included teammate Eric Wong Hui-wai, enabling them to work together on the bike section.

At the end of the event Law and Wong placed fourth and sixth respectively, crossing the line behind one athlete from Kazakhstan and two from Korea.
