Kitchee survived a bout of late nerves to beat Sun Pegasus 2-1 in a BOCG Life Premier League clash yesterday and tighten their grip on their bid for a second successive championship title.

The narrow, but important victory at Mong Kok Stadium kept the defending champions on top of the table with 26 points, one ahead of Eastern, who beat Wofoo Tai Po 1-0 in an earlier match through an early goal by Giovane da Silva.

A penalty kick in the first half from Jorge Tarres put Kitchee ahead before Matthew Lam added to the tally 10 minutes after the break, the midfielder heading home his first goal of the season.

Pegasus, who needed a result to keep their title hopes alive, closed the gap with Admir Rascic picking up his 10th goal of the season through a header from Petrisor Voinea’s cross.

Niko Tokic almost found the equaliser for Pegasus, but his weak shot following a goal-mouth scramble was cleared off the line by Kitchee captain Lo Kwan-yee.

Pegasus fought desperately to find an equaliser, but Kitchee, who have five matches left, hung on to ward off some late challenges.
