South China name newcomer Daniel McBreen in AFC Cup squad
South China newcomer Daniel McBreen has gone straight into the squad for the AFC Cup despite only just arriving in Hong Kong.
The Caroliners announced their four foreign players for the regional cup ahead of their crucial BOCG Life Premier League clash against Sun Pegasus at Mong Kok Stadium on Sunday.
The 2013 A-League golden boot winner, who joined last week, is in along with goalkeeper Cristian Mora, centre-half Bojan Malisic and midfield stopper Sean Tse Ka-keung for the campaign, which kicks off with an away match against Global FC of the Philippines on February 25.
"McBreen is the type of striker we are looking for and although he just joined us for a short period of time, there is a month to go before the regional tournament starts and we are confident he can improve his form as required," said South China coach Mario Gomez.
South China's two other Asian forwards, Yuto Nakamura and Evan Kostopoulos, were considered before McBreen's arrival, while another newcomer Mahama Awal, who scored on his debut against Kitchee two weeks ago, is not eligible for the Asian foreign player slots because he is from Cameroon.
McBreen, 37, however, is likely to remain on the bench against Pegasus on Sunday and will be bedded in slowly.
