Once hailed as the future of Hong Kong soccer, struggling midfielder Lau Cheuk-hin is hoping his move to South China can revitalise a career in danger of going off the rails.

The domestic powerhouses yesterday announced that the 22-year-old had signed, having started only one match this season for YFCMD.

"I thank South China for giving me such an opportunity to prove myself," said Lau, who has signed a two-year contract and will wear No 20. "I am still young and there is definitely room for improvement under a new environment where we have a lot of quality players.

"South China are a household name in Hong Kong soccer and it's an honour to be part of them. I know there will be pressure in playing for a big club but hopefully the pressure can push me to work harder."

Lau has gone through the ups and downs of professional football despite his relative inexperience in the top flight.

One of Sham Shui Po's young guns who won promotion to the First Division in 2011, Lau's brilliant performance in the top flight the following season earned him the Best Youth Player award. His creativity in midfield also caught the eye of then national team coach Ernie Merrick, who picked him in a friendly against Vietnam in 2012.

But he has failed to gain a regular place with Yokohama since last season amid question marks over his fitness and rumours of a falling out with the coach. The move to South China, who are desperate to strengthen the squad in preparation for the forthcoming AFC Cup, may provide a fresh start.
