Hong Kong's Adderly Fong thrilled with first F1 test drive at Valencia
Hong Kong's Adderly Fong Cheun-yue described his history-making drive in a Formula One car as "thrilling" as he completed almost 400km in his dream machine in Spain.
The 24-year-old Vancouver-born Fong drove into the history books by becoming the first Hong Kong racer to drive a Formula One car, completing 99 laps and 396km in a two-year-old Sauber C31 at Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo.
Fong is hoping his historic ride will allow him to obtain an FIA super licence, having fulfilled the minimum 300km that would allow him to take part in F1 practice or testing during a round of the F1 world championship.
"I am more than happy to have overcome the first hurdle. We'll have to wait and see if the FIA grants me the super licence. I hope I can remain in the F1 circle and become a regular test driver in 2015, and perhaps race in Formula One in 2016," said Fong, who outpaced the reigning FIA European Formula Three champion and Lotus F1 prospect Esteban Ocon during his session.
"It was easier than what I had expected with the handling of the car, the downforce, the horsepower and the steering. I thought I needed half a day to get used to everything, but it turned out well," said Fong.
The Hong Kong driver, the reigning champion in the Audi R8 LMS Cup, clocked his best time of one minute, 14.885 seconds, almost as fast as the Sauber F1 testing team's time of 1:14:00 recorded in June.
