Talented but injury-prone looks set to be on the verge of returning to the winner's circle following an eye-catching Class Three Ng Tung River Handicap (1,000m) performance on a yielding track on Wednesday night.

The David Hall-trained B Choice has a history of leg issues and has been restricted to just seven starts since an impressive debut win last season in October.

The five-year-old got the new campaign off to a good start on October 6 with a three-quarter-length third behind Mr Ginger, but then had a setback nine days later with a tendon injury and followed a month later with a wound to his right-hind cannon and pastern.

Only getting back to the training track in late January, B Choice returned on April 28 and faded out of things over the final 400m behind Costa Del Sol after a hard run outside the leader from gate 14.

The gelding then had the benefit of a good all-weather track trial and was well-backed in the dying minutes to jump at $57 for Brett Prebble in his first run at the city venue.

He was allowed to ease back after jumping nicely from gate eight, had nearly 10 lengths to make up at the 450m, but rattled home in the middle part of the track to cut the final margin to 1¾ lengths behind the front-running winner Super Fresh.
