Coach Shen Jinkang set to guide Lee Wai-sze towards Rio 2016 medal
Shen Jinkang, Hong Kong's coach, wants to stay in the job for another four years to give Lee Wai-sze the best possible chance of winning another Olympic medal at Rio 2016.
The mainlander will soon reach the retirement age of 60 required by his employer, the Sports Institute, but said last night he would like to stay.
"I have worked out a plan for Lee with the Rio Games as the firm target," said the coach. "She will reach her golden age in the sport in the next four to eight years and we are expecting something for her in the Olympics."
After Lee won bronze in the women's keirin in the London Olympics, the Sports Institute is unlikely not to extend Shen's contract unless he wants to quit.
Shen revealed he is grooming Wong Kam-po as his successor. Wong, 40 next year, is about to quit the sport after taking part in the road race in the London Games this summer.
"He will call it a day as a rider very soon," said Shen. "Probably it will come before the end of the year.
