South Korea’s Shin leads Women’s Open from Vu, Korda heading into final round
- Shin Ji-yai, who has won the tournament twice before, cards five-under 67 to take one-shot lead heading into final round
Two-time former winner Shin Ji-yai will take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Women’s Open at St Andrews on Sunday, and said she had need all her years of experience to battle her way to a third round five-under-par 67.
The 36-year-old, who won the tournament in 2008 and 2012, moved to seven under overall, a stroke clear of defending champion Lilia Vu and two ahead of overnight leader and world No 1 Nelly Korda.
On another wet and windy day in Scotland, Shin put herself in pole position by limiting herself to just two bogeys, but said her slender lead was “nothing” given similar weather is expected for the final round.
“This is my third time at St Andrews. That’s how much I’ve played it, for so long,” said Shin. “I have a lot of experience with links courses – not with this tough wind, but pretty much I have a lot of good experience.
“That’s why it took all my skill today. The wind was nice to me today, and I made two bogeys today, but I think everyone can make one or two bogeys.”
Korda was one-under for the day through 11 holes, but her bid for a second major this year unravelled when she dropped five shots in six holes on the back nine, before picking up a much-needed birdie at the last.
