Asian Games 2023: Golf gold and stunning football upset – Hong Kong’s athletes enjoy day of unprecedented success
- Taichi Kho wins men’s individual golf tournament, takes bronze with Matthew Cheung, Jason Hak and Terrence Ng in team event
- Hong Kong’s footballers stun Iran to reach semi-finals for first time ever, bettering quarter-final performance in 1958
Hong Kong’s athletes enjoyed a day of unprecedented success at the Asian Games on Sunday, with its golfers winning medals for the first time and the men’s football team going further than ever before.
Taichi Kho added a sixth gold medal to Hong Kong’s tally, winning the individual men’s golf tournament, and took bronze in the team event alongside Matthew Cheung, Jason Hak Shun-yat and Terrence Ng Shing-fung.
The medals were the first Hong Kong’s golfers have won since the sport became a recognised event at the New Delhi Games in 1982.
“Those are my guys and it’s a team effort,” Kho said. “It’s not really just myself as an individual, but it feels like, you know, the whole group came together for me to be able to do that. It’s really special.”
Not since Hong Kong first entered the Games in 1958 has its football team reached the last four, and a stunning 1-0 victory over Iran has catapulted Jorn Andersen’s team into the unknown.
Poon Pui-hin’s 47th minute strike set up a clash with Japan on Wednesday, with a shot at a historic gold medal at stake.
