LIV Golf heading to Hong Kong in 2024, sources say, bringing world’s best to city for three-day event
- The tournament, which features the likes of Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith and Brooks Koepka has been pencilled in for March
- Economy likely to get boost from hosting Saudi-backed league at Hong Kong Golf Club
Hong Kong is expected to score another international sporting event as part of its post-Covid recovery, with sources telling the Post the city was going to be named as one of the hosts for LIV Golf in 2024, pulling in some of the world’s best players.
Landing the Saudi-backed team tournament, which has shaken up the world of golf in the past 18 months, would bring the likes of major winners Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith to the city.
Hong Kong could also expect to reap bumper financial benefits, while hosting the three-day tournament would assuage fears that earmarking part of Hong Kong Golf Club for development could stop organisers making the venue part of their future plans.
Much like the city’s annual rugby sevens, a LIV event would also inject a timely dose of razzmatazz, with award-winning musical artists such as DJ Snake and Alesso performing at the tournament in England in July and Tiesto scheduled to appear at next week’s stop in the US.
With the league’s season next year rumoured to be starting in Australia in February, the city’s event has been pencilled in for March at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling, sources said.
Although yet to be officially confirmed, sources said the club was “preparing to stage the tournament” and believed it would be named as one of the 14 global events taking place next year.
