Hong Kong-based tech company Freed Group has been announced as the title sponsor for next month’s Women’s Scottish Open.

The LPGA tournament will take place at Dundonald Links between August 3 to 6, and champion Ayaka Furue is returning to defend her title on something of a hot streak.

Furue already has six top five finishes under her belt this season, and finished in a tie for eighth at last month’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Abel Zhao, the company’s co-founder and CEO, said his organisation was thrilled to be sponsoring the tournament and believed in “supporting athletes in their quest for greatness”.

“We look forward to witnessing these exceptional athletes showcase their skills and hope that our partnership will contribute to the success of this event,” Zhao said.

In a statement, Ricki Lasky, the LPGA chief tour business and operations officer, said she believed the partnership would “help elevate the event” and added the tour was grateful for the support.

According to a spokeswoman, the tournament’s popularity worldwide would enable Freed Group to strengthen its presence “extending beyond leading consumer brands and platforms to international sports and events”.

“The 2023 Women’s Scottish Open will serve as the milestone that declares Freed Group’s presence on the global stage, further advancing the company towards its mission of fundamentally modernising legacy organisations’ digital infrastructure and commercialisation capability around the world,” a spokeswoman said.

Furue, meanwhile, said she was looking forward to returning to the scene of the win that proved the highlight of her rookie season.

“The last round I played at Dundonald was my best ever and it was the course record, a 10 under par with no bogeys, so I can’t wait to return and I just hope that I can continue where I left off,” she said.
