Women’s PGA Championship winner Yin Ruoning will lead China’s golfers at the Asian Games in September, in a squad that also includes rising men’s amateur Ding Wenyi.
The host nation have named a competitive men’s team for the tournament at Hangzhou’s West Lake International Golf Course, with Ding joined in the men’s trio by DP World Tour member Wu Ashun and Chen Guxin.
But it is on the women’s side that China will expect to challenge for gold, with Yin joined by Lin Xiyu, who came third at last month’s major in the US, and their LPGA Tour colleague Yu Liu.
Hong Kong’s golf officials, meanwhile, have opted for a squad that mixes the experience of Taichi Kho, who has won on the Asian Tour, Matthew Cheung, Jason Hak and the city’s only LPGA Tour golfer Tiffany Chan, with rising stars such as Terrence Ng, Arianna Lau and Sophie Han.
“It seems like we’ve been waiting for this opportunity for such a long time, given the event was postponed for a year because of the pandemic,” Tim Tang, the Hong Kong Golf Association’s head coach, said. “But in that time our players have gone from strength to strength. It’s just a great opportunity to show the world again how far the game of golf has come in Hong Kong.”
With professional players allowed to compete for the first time, the tournament, which will take place from September 29 to October 1, will see some of the best in the region battle it out for individual and team honours.
