Asian Tour: Poulter and Stenson to headline World City Championship as top-flight golf returns to Hong Kong
- Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson named in field for first major tournament in city in 3 years
- Event luring big names with top 4 finishers qualifying for 151st Open Championship
Former Hong Kong Open winner Ian Poulter and 2016 Open champion Henrik Stenson will be among a strong field at the World City Championship in a couple of weeks.
The former Ryder Cup and now LIV golf teammates said they were “excited and delighted” to be playing in the first Asian Tour event in the city for three years.
For Poulter, the tournament represents a return to the site of his 2010 triumph, when he blew the rest of the field away at Hong Kong Golf Club with a record 22-under-par performance, and a chance to qualify for this year’s 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, with four spots up for grabs.
Stenson, meanwhile, said he was looking forward to coming to the city for the first time, although the Swede will not have the added incentive of a place in the year’s final major, having already qualified courtesy of his win six years ago.
With several other big names also potentially making an appearance, the rest of the field is likely to be made up of the best from across Asia, including several of Hong Kong’s top young professionals.
Taichi Kho, Matthew Cheung and Leon D’Souza are all expected to take part, and Kho said competing as a professional in Hong Kong was something he’d “dreamed about since I was a little kid”.
