The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai will remain on the Formula One calendar until at least 2030, under a new five-year deal, officials said on Friday.

The deal was announced at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Shanghai International Circuit hosted its first Formula One race 20 years ago and China is seen as a major part of the sport’s efforts to increase its fan base.

Formula One’s previous contract to race at the circuit, signed in 2021, had been due to run out next year.

In a statement announcing the extension, Formula One claimed a “fan base” of 150 million people in China and said most had started to follow the sport in the past four years – 50 per cent of them women.

The Chinese Grand Prix will be the second round on the 2025 calendar, taking place on March 21-23.
