Formula One: Max Verstappen hails ‘incredible weekend’ as Austrian victory takes him past Senna on list for most wins

  • Seventh victory of the season was 42nd of Verstappen’s career, one more than Ayrton Senna

Max Verstappen passed Ayrton Senna on the list of all-time winners in Formula One with another dominant performance on what he called “an incredible weekend” in Austria.

If there were any doubts as to the Dutchman’s total hold on the sport they were dispelled just before the end of Sunday’s race, when he pitted and then claimed the extra point for fastest lap on the final lap.

Teammate Sergio Perez battled his way from 15th on the grid to finish third, underlying Red Bull’s utter superiority. Charles Leclerc finished second for Ferrari at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

Verstappen said the weekend, where he also topped practice and qualifying on Friday, and Saturday’s shoot-out qualifying and sprint race, “couldn’t have been any better to be honest”.

“I felt really comfortable in the car all weekend and we were able to do everything that we had planned,” he said. “The final pit stop was a risk, of course. I think the team could hear from my voice on the radio that I wanted to pit.
