Liverpool thrash Hammers, City finally win again, Forest give Premier League that 70s vibe
Liverpool continue their seemingly inevitable march towards the title, while Southampton stay on course to be the worst team in history
The Premier League has a slightly retro feel to it this morning, with Liverpool top and Nottingham Forest in second – and if you can hear the dulcet tones of the late Brian Clough in the background you’re not alone.
Plenty of fan bases can be said to be “long suffering” but the last time Forest were in this position at the end of a season was 1979, although they did have the first of their back-to-back European Cups to console themselves with.
With Arsenal and Chelsea still to play before year’s end, Forest could well be back to fourth by the time 2025 rolls around, but at least their supporters can dream of better days ahead, which is all Manchester City fans really have to hold onto.
Liverpool, meanwhile, who won the old First Division in 1979 having finished runners up to Forest the previous year, march on to a seemingly inevitable title triumph, and that is where we’ll start today’s look at what happened overnight.
West Ham, hammered
Liverpool put five past West Ham on Sunday, stretching their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points and the only question now appears when, not if, they will win the title for a record-equalling 20th time.
