Manchester United win dramatic ‘crisis derby’, Chelsea are challengers, Saints sack boss
Ruben Amorim earned a second win of the season over Pep Guardiola, as Manchester City lose an eighth match in 11
When was the last time so many elite sides failed to win on the same weekend?
Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Barcelona all suffered defeat, while Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Juventus drew.
But, for now, our focus is solely on Sunday night’s action – so here’s what happened while you were sleeping.
Red derby delight
Manchester United came out on top in the “crisis derby” in dramatic fashion.
Trailing 1-0 with two minutes remaining at the Etihad, they turned the game on its head with two late goals to clinch a 2-1 victory.
There was a huge selection call from manager Ruben Amorim, who left forwards Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out of the match day squad, and it initially seemed to backfire as United seemingly had no firepower to bring off the bench as they chased an equaliser to Josko Gvardiol’s first-half opener.
Cue Amad Diallo. Arguably the player who’s benefited most from Amorim’s arrival won a penalty which Bruno Fernandes put away, before dusting himself down to score a famous winner.
That’s now eight defeats in 11 for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City – with two in that run delivered by Amorim – as they lie nine points behind leaders Liverpool in fifth place, having played a game more and below even Nottingham Forest.
