‘Most beautiful’: hundreds brave rain to buy always-out-of-stock Hong Kong football jersey
City team’s recent ‘purple patch’ of good form and a design considered the best have seen the jersey acquire a cult status among diehard fans
Hundreds of Hong Kong football fanatics braved the rain and queued down the street on Tuesday, hoping to grab their copy of the city’s most popular team jersey ever.
The Hong Kong football strip went on sale in June, but the annual allocation of 2,000 was all snapped up on release day.
A further 1,000 jerseys were sold at Hong Kong Stadium last week before the 3-1 win over the Philippines, with another 1,000 expected to be sold at the Nike Rise store on Fa Yuen Street in Mong Kok on Tuesday.
“This will be my third Hong Kong jersey, but this one is always out of stock. I like this one because the design is quite different from a lot of football jerseys,” said football fan Keith Yau.
“Also, because Hong Kong is doing quite well recently, it makes me want it more.”
Hundreds of Hong Kong fans, mostly young to middle-aged men, were queuing for up to an hour to get their hands on the shirt, which has garnered cult status among the city’s diehard supporters.
