Lee Man appoint Hong Kong boss Ashley Westwood’s assistant as head coach: sources
Lee Man identify successor to Tsang Chiu-tat, who left the club following an Asian Champions League 2 defeat last month
Hong Kong’s out-of-form Premier League champions Lee Man have decided to appoint Matt Holland, assistant to Hong Kong boss Ashley Westwood, as their head coach, sources have told the Post.
Holland joined the Hong Kong representative team staff before last month’s Fifa international window, although the local football association did not officially announce the 36-year-old’s appointment.
Former head coach Tsang Chiu-tat left Lee Man after their 3-1 defeat to Tampines Rovers in Singapore one month ago.
Following a 1-1 draw with Kitchee on Saturday, club president Norman Lee Man-yan announced he had signed a new head coach to a one-and-a-half year contract, who would start work at the end of November.
Lee did not reveal the new boss’ name, but did add that the new man was in his 30s and had previous experience in Hong Kong and Thailand.
The Welshman fits that description and the Post has been told that, after missing out on other high-profile targets, Lee turned to Holland – who was the club’s academy director for two years from 2020 – in his bid to revive Lee Man’s season.
