England eye 2026 World Cup glory after naming ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel as new manager
Lee Carsley, who had been in interim charge following Gareth Southgate’s exit, will return to manage the under-21s side
England have announced the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as manager of the senior men’s national side, with the English FA targeting World Cup glory in 2026.
The news means Lee Carsely, who had been interim head coach following the departure of Gareth Southgate after the Uefa Euro 2024 campaign, will remain in charge until the end of the year before returning to the under-21 team.
Tuchel, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season and had been mooted as a possible candidate to become Manchester United manager had Erik ten Hag departed, will be reunited with coach Anthony Barry, with whom he worked alongside at Chelsea and Bayern.
“I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team,” Tuchel said. “I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.
“To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting. Working closely with Anthony as my assistant coach, we will do everything we can to make England successful and the supporters proud.
“I want to thank the FA, in particular Mark and John, for their trust and I am looking forward to starting our journey together.”
