In a discussion on Manchester United last week, ESPN analyst Craig Burley suggested the club did “mediocrity better than any other top team”, and as a former Chelsea, Derby County and Celtic player, the Scotsman knows the mediocre when he sees it.

But his point was not without merit. Since the departure of Alex Ferguson, the team that dominated the Premier League for a decade has been on an equally long downward spiral, and could be a case study in how businesses driven by personality do once that person has left.

Will Manchester City be the same once Pep Guardiola leaves? Does Arne Slot’s success at Liverpool mean the club has a better structure overall, or was just better at finding a replacement for Jurgen Klopp?

It is only a matter of time before United begin the hunt for another boss, but if those doing the searching are mediocre, what hope for the rest? Their defeat at home to Tottenham was just one of the things that happened while you were sleeping.

Dead man walking

Is this the game that finally gets Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag the sack? If losing 3-0 at home to Tottenham with a performance so bad fans leave early, booing as they go, doesn’t do it, you have to wonder what will.
