Euro 2024: Germany through, Scotland still alive, as Croatia, Albania play thrilling draw
- A round-up of all the action from day six, which produced our first last-16 qualifier and more last-minute drama as Croatian hopes grew slim
Hosts Germany became the first team through to the knockout stages following their 2-0 victory over Hungary on day six at Euro 2024.
Meanwhile, Croatia’s hopes of reaching the last-16 took a hit as they were held to a 2-2 draw against Albania, but Scotland’s dreams are still just about intact after they drew 1-1 with Switzerland.
Germany’s clash with Hungary was considered somewhat of a banana skin for the hosts, as Julian Nagelsmann’s side had failed to beat them when they met at Euro 2020 and in both Uefa Nations League encounters.
However, any concerns were assuaged on 22 minutes when man of the moment Jamal Musiala opened the scoring after a mix-up in the Hungary defence allowed Barcelona’s Ilkay Gundogan to play the Bayern Munich forward in.
Germany then rode their luck with the Hungarians coming close to an equaliser on several occasions but Gundogan went from provider to finisher with his country’s second on 67 minutes.
