Former Wuhan Three Towns winger Nicolae Stanciu has saluted the support he has received in China, after his stunning goal helped Romania open their Euro 2024 campaign with victory.

Notching just their second win ever in the competition’s history, the Eastern European nation beat Ukraine 3-0 with the 31-year-old’s fierce strike kicking off proceedings.

After the match, Stanciu had some words for fans in China, having spent two seasons in the Chinese Super League, enjoying title success in his final campaign.

“I want to thank them because they follow our national team,” he told reporters after the match, when asked if he had anything to say to his supporters in China.

“I felt really good in China, I have good memories – winning the league and the Super Cup there for Wuhan. It was amazing, they are great and I wish them all the best for the future.”

Stanciu joined Wuhan from Czech Republic side Slavia Prague in 2022, just after their promotion to the CSL.

And in his first full season with the team, helped them win the top-flight title for the first time in their history, later adding a first Super Cup.

He left to join Saudi Pro League side Darmac at the start of last season.

At international level, Stanciu is the Romania captain and led his side through an unbeaten qualifying campaign to reach the Euro 2024 finals.

It is their first major tournament appearance for eight years and victory means they are on course for a place in the last-16, as four of the six best third-place group sides qualify.
