Premier League title race: Man City favourites with all bookies, but Arsenal still have hope as battle goes to final day

  • Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United guarantees title race will stay alive until final day of campaign
  • Pep Guardiola’s side have game in hand away at Tottenham midweek – a fixture they have not won since 2018

Arsenal are still fighting for the Premier League title as the battle with Manchester City goes right into the final day.

Pep Guardiola’s side have to go to the Gunners’ north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and get something to avoid relinquishing the advantage.

Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United leaves them a point clear of City with a game remaining, but City still have two matches left to play.

So is there any hope for Gunners fans to fall on that City will not make it an unprecedented four titles in a row?

Most bookmakers have the reigning champions as heavy favourites with their destiny in their own hands. If they get full points from their remaining two fixtures, it’s a fifth title in six seasons regardless of what Arsenal do.

City are unbeaten since a December 6 defeat at Aston Villa that ended a run of four matches without a win, and have now been victorious in seven consecutive matches. The last time they failed to win was a 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal on March 31 – a result that left the Citizens third and three points behind then leaders Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s form has been sensational. Just twice in their past 17 matches have they failed to win. Aside from the aforementioned draw with City, they suffered a shock home defeat to Villa on April 14 but have been flawless otherwise and it highlights the incredible pace City have set.

During this run, Arsenal have won 6-0 twice and 5-0 three times, while they have won away at fellow “Big Six” members Tottenham and Manchester United.

Arsenal also have the best goal difference in the league and their 27 wins so far is one more than they achieved in the 2003-04 campaign, which saw them win the title without losing a match – and still their destiny is out of their hands.

So what gives them reason to hope?

Well, no side in English football history has ever won four top-flight championships in a row. Three consecutive titles has been achieved on six occasions, with Arsenal themselves completing the “three-peat” in 1934-35, but no side has ever defended the title a third time.

Meanwhile, City have a wretched record at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium. Before their 1-0 victory there in the FA Cup earlier this campaign, they had lost every single visit without even registering a goal.

Tottenham come into this match in a dismal run of form with the weekend’s victory over Burnley ending a run of four consecutive defeats but they always seem to turn it on when Guardiola’s side are in town regardless of their own situation.

In 2018-19, a 1-0 defeat saw them eliminate City from the Champions League, while Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte have all enjoyed home victories over them since the stadium’s inauguration.

And, if Villa lose at home to Liverpool in a match that takes place 24 hours before, a Spurs victory over City would narrow the gap with fourth place, and qualification to the Champions League, to just one point going into the final match of the campaign. That gives them something tangible to fight for.

And lastly for Arsenal, they have pulled off the “impossible” once before when they ended their 18-year title drought in 1989 in the final minute of the entire campaign by winning at the home of their direct challengers and the team most considered to be England’s best at the time.

Liverpool, reigning champions, knew that anything other than a defeat to the Gunners by a clear two-goal margin at Anfield would guarantee the title. They were 1-0 down with 90 minutes up and just running down the clock. But, against all the odds, up popped Michael Thomas to score a second and send Arsenal fans wild.

On the final day of this campaign, City welcome West Ham, while Arsenal host Everton. Can the Gunners find a way to achieve the miracle for a second time?
