It’s not often a bona fide English Premier League champion turns up in Hong Kong, let alone plays at the Soccer Sevens.

But Leicester City hero and Manchester United academy product Danny Simpson was one of the stars of the show at Hong Kong Football Club last weekend, losing a tight Plate final with Kowloon Cricket Club (KCC) to the Citi All-Stars – who were made up entirely of ex-pros.

“I hate losing, it’s part of the reason why I’ve had a decent career, and it took me a few hours to calm down,” the 36-year-old English right back told the Post with a laugh ahead of a charity meet and greet with KCC members at his hosts’ clubhouse in Jordan.

The event raised nearly HK$15,000 for the Sprouts Foundation, for whom KCC provide free football coaching at the schools they support in Tai Wai and San Po Kong.

“But I like to win. I came here to win,” Simpson added. “People say that it’s about taking part but we want to win, and the day that goes away is the day I won’t play in any kind of games again.”

Simpson, a two-time Championship winner as well with Queens Park Rangers and Newcastle, has been without a club since leaving Bristol City in March 2022.
