The words, of course, come from the Euro 96 hit “Three Lions”, with the Baddiel & Skinner song captivating England during that run to the semi-final. Since then the words have been used at every tournament by England fans – more often in hope than expectation.

It has only got harder to avoid football’s potential homecoming since Gareth Southgate’s England team reached the final – the country’s first major final since the 1966 Fifa World Cup.
