Egyptian wins the Puskas Award for goal of the year while Uefa Champions League and World Cup winners are rewarded

Fifa have announced the results of their annual The Best awards at a star-studded ceremony with the biggest surprise that Luka Modric has beaten Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the coveted best men’s player title.

Modric pipped his former teammate Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah to the award, but the Egyptian forward could console himself with winning the Puskas Award for the best goal of the year.

France World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe was fourth on the list ahead of Messi.

The best women’s player was Marta, who won for a sixth time but the first since 2011. The Orlando City player won ahead of Olympique Lyonnais pair Dzsenifer Maroszan and Ada Hegerberg, with USA striker Megan Rapinoe in fourth.

Olympique Lyonnais women’s coach Reynald Pedros won The Best Women’s Coach after a French league and Uefa Champions League double.

Didier Deschamps made sure The Best Men’s Coach title went to France too, after winning the World Cup in Russia saw him pip Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic and Champions League winner Zinedine Zidane.
