Asian Games test event in Hangzhou doubles as audition for Hong Kong’s women’s cricketers
- Hong Kong squad for next week’s East Asia Cup prioritises players qualified to return to Hangzhou in September for multisport showpiece
- Team hope to gain valuable experience before the Games by playing in T20 tournament against China and Japan at the same venue
Cricket Hong Kong is sending a 14-player women’s squad to compete in the East Asia Cup in Hangzhou next week, with the tournament doubling up as a test event for the Asian Games.
With South Korea unable to attend, this year’s T20 competition at Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field will feature only three teams, in China, Japan and Hong Kong.
Kary Chan Ka-ying will lead a Hong Kong squad showing six changes from the one that competed in the recent Capricorn Quad series in Namibia. Missing this time will be the likes of Mariko Hill and Natasha Miles, with the focus placed on players who are qualified to represent the city at the multisport Games in September.
“There are several new faces in the squad who we have every confidence can make the step up to international cricket,” Mark Farmer, CHK’s general manager of high performance, said.
“Playing at the venue for the Asian Games later in the year is a bonus that will give us valuable experience that will only benefit the squad in preparing for September.”
