FairBreak Invitational: Nepal’s Rubina Chhetry makes history with 5-wicket haul as Barmy Army march on
- Chhetry becomes first player from associate nation to reach milestone at FairBreak Invitational during her side’s 61-run win over Sapphires
- In day’s other game, Danni Wyatt hits blistering 76 as Falcons crush Spirit by 9 wickets
Rubina Chhetry made FairBreak Invitational history on Wednesday, becoming the first player from an associate nation to take five wickets in a match as The Barmy Army marched into the semi-finals.
Chhetry starred with both bat and ball at Kowloon Cricket Club, scoring an unbeaten 32 in her side’s impressive 168 for eight, and then conceded just 11 runs as her side crushed Sapphires by 61 runs with more than four overs remaining.
The 29-year-old was named player of the match for her efforts and said the award meant a lot because “I know everyone back home in Nepal is watching”.
“We are here to perform, and I want people to know that cricket is flourishing in Nepal, for women as well,” she added.
Defeat was Sapphires’ fourth in five games and victory was always unlikely despite their opponents losing wickets regularly at the start of the innings.
But while her teammates were trudging too and from the pavilion, Laura Wolvaardt was hammering away at the other end. The South African made 49 from 32 balls before being bowled by Jivana Aras, who took four wickets in a losing cause.
