A big year for women’s cricket in Hong Kong will get started this weekend with back-to-back T20 All Star games, before the auction for the inaugural women’s IPL on Monday.

While 10 of the city’s players registered for the WIPL, which will take place in Mumbai next month, only Hong Kong captain Kary Chan made the shortlist, with just eight players from associate nations included.

Players from the UAE make up half that number, with others from the Netherlands, Thailand and the US.

The five franchises were sold for £465m last month, with existing IPL teams Mumbai, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals securing sides. Two new franchises were also bought and will be based in Ahmedabad and Lucknow.

Each side can buy a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players, including seven overseas cricketers for the tournament, with the auction on February 13 and the league itself running from March 4 to 26.

A week after the WIPL finishes, the Fairbreak Invitational will start in Hong Kong, with many of the same players battling it out at Kowloon Cricket Club for the second edition of the new tournament.
