Queen Elizabeth led the tributes to England’s cricketers after they lifted the Cricket World Cup in a dramatic final at Lord’s on Sunday.
The game was tied after both sides scored 241 from their 50 overs and went to a winner-takes-all Super Over.
The Super Overs finished with the scores tied once more.
Both teams scored 16 runs from the six balls, although England were helped by a freak four from Martin Guptill’s throw deflecting off the bat of Ben Stokes as he dived for the crease.

The royal family Twitter account posted a message from the queen.
“Prince Philip and I send our warmest congratulations to the England Men’s Cricket Team after such a thrilling victory in today’s World Cup Final,” she said.

The Cricket World Cup’s official Twitter account decided to have some fun after the drama was done.
They captioned a photo of England’s final hero Stokes and Indian all-time great Sachin Tendulkar as “The greatest cricketer of all time – and Sachin Tendulkar.”
The “Little Master” himself tweeted his congratulations.

A game that ebbed and flowed from the 1st ball to the 612th!
Feel for New Zealand who did everything that England did and still fell short.
Congratulations to England.#CWC19 #NZvENG @ECB_cricket @BLACKCAPS pic.twitter.com/FlEJb0NfId

“A game that ebbed and flowed from the 1st ball to the 612th!” he wrote.
“Feel for New Zealand who did everything that England did and still fell short.”
Tendulkar was not the only one to suggest injustice in the result.

Fellow former India international VVS Laxman wrote that it was “Really tough on the Black Caps but they can be very proud.”
Laxman also described England’s first World Cup victory as won in “the most dramatic way” as he offered his congratulations.
“What a game. Cricket has been the winner.” he declared in a sentiment echoed by many fans on Twitter.

Yuvraj Singh, another former India player, called it a “great game” and an “epic final and
wrote that he does not agree with the rule that saw New Zealand lose on the number of boundaries scored during the course of the match.
“But rules are rules,” he added. “Congratulations to England on finally winning the World Cup, my heart goes out for the Kiwis”.

Black Caps cricketer Jimmy Neesham dealt with his heartbreak by tweeting some advice to youngsters hoping to follow in his footsteps.
“Kids, don’t take up sport,” he wrote. “Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy.”
Neesham tweeted afterwards to congratulate England, calling their victory “well deserved”. He also expressed his heartache. “That hurts. Hopefully there’s a day or two over the next decade where I don’t think about that last half hour.

The British press did not miss out on the opportunity for a pun.
Three of the daily newspapers went with “Champagne Super Over” as their headline for the victory.
The Sun ignored Oasis and went with “They Think It’s All Super Over, It Is Now,” mirroring the commentary from England’s 1966 Fifa World Cup win.

Conservative politician Jacob Rees-Mogg used the victory to score points in his pro-Brexit agenda.
The Tory wrote, “we clearly don’t need Europe to win”.
But his tweet started a backlash as many pointed out the diversity of the England team.

Various tweets highlighted that the team was captained by Irishman Eoin Morgan and the wins that eventually led to the side being winners were scored by New Zealand-born Ben Stokes.
They noted the examples , and the Super Over being bowled by Barbados-born Jofra Archer, as reasons for Britons to be proud.

The fast bowler tweeted his delight. “Dreams do come true,” he wrote as a caption to a picture of the team lifting the trophy.
One Twitter user has claimed that England should not have been given six runs but five for when the ball went for a boundary after the throw was deflected by Stokes’ bat.

If that had been the case, New Zealand would have been the world champions.
