China’s Sun Yingsha pocketed her third World Table Tennis (WTT) Champions title in as many outings this season after beating fellow compatriot Wang Yidi 4-2 in Macau on Sunday.
The seven-day tournament, which was the third of five WTT Champions events this season, wrapped up with a sold-out crowd of around 4,500 spectators filling the seats at the Macau East Asian Games Dome, one of the major venues of the 2005 East Asian Games, which also hosted some events for the Asian Indoor Games two years later.
Paris Olympics silver medallist Sun, who held a career 8-4 record over Wang, cruised to victory in little more than 52 minutes with an 11-7, 6-11, 12-10, 4-11, 11-8, 11-4 win.
“Both of us played superbly in today’s match and I tried my best to secure every point and to get into my best form as soon as possible,” Sun said.
“I played better and better in the sixth game but the results didn’t really matter during this match, all I wanted was to present an entertaining match for you all.”
Considered a second-tier WTT Series event behind only the prestigious WTT Finals, the latest title in Macau also marked the second time Sun had triumphed in the city since the event made its debut back in 2022, with fellow Chinese teammate and world No 3 Wang Manyu’s crown sandwiched between her two titles.
