A day after the round of his life, Taichi Kho was at it again on Friday, shooting a 12-under-par round of 60 on the second day of the Asian Games golf tournament.
Elsewhere, the women’s squash team reached the final of their event, while the men won bronze after losing their semi-final. There has also been another fencing medal, via the men’s épée team.
Hong Kong athletes were involved in 18 sports on Friday.
Hong Kong chase Jakarta haul
Friday’s fencing and squash medals took Hong Kong’s total tally for the Games to 34, comprising five gold, 12 silver and 17 bronze. They moved two medals ahead of India overall, although India had three more golds.
Hong Kong’s best Asian Games haul ever was 46 medals, in Jakarta in 2018: eight golds, 18 silver, 20 bronze.




Squash
Hong Kong’s women remain on course to retain the Asian Games crown they claimed in 2018 after defeating India 2-1 in Friday’s semi-final.
Chan Sin-yuk eased to a 3-0 victory over Tanvi Khanna in the opening match. Hong Kong were pegged back after Indian veteran Joshna Chinappa recovered from 2-1 down to edge Ho Tze-lok 3-2.
But Lee Ka-yi – like Ho, a member of the 2018 gold-medal winning team – beat 15-year-old Anahat Singh 3-0 to set up a final meeting with either Malaysia at 1pm on Saturday.
“I really wanted to win my rounds, so there is less pressure on the [third player],” Ho said. “Thankfully my teammates did very well and we are very lucky to make the final. I hope it can finish like last time.”
Hong Kong’s men must settle for bronze, however, after a 2-1 semi final defeat by Pakistan. Lau Tsz-kwan kept Hong Kong hopes alive, winning a topsy-turvy second match 3-2 against Asim Khan, after Noor Zaman beat 2018 team silver-medallist Henry Leung Chi-hin 3-1.
The deciding match was a one-sided affair, Nasir Iqbal sweeping past Tang Ming-hong 3-0, to send Pakistan into Saturday’s final against either 2018 champions Malaysia or India.

Fencing
Hong Kong’s men’s épée team had to settle for bronze after a 45-30 semi-final loss to Kazakhstan. The trio of Ho Wai-hang – who claimed bronze in the individual event – Ng Ho-tin and Fong Hoi-sun trailed throughout the contest and their fate was sealed when Elmir Alimzhanov, another individual bronze medallist, closed the ninth relay against Fong with the final touch.
Their bronze, after they defeated Uzbekistan 45-31 in their quarter-final, made it nine fencing medals for Hong Kong, led by individual foil gold for Cheung Ka-long and silver for the women’s épée team.
The women’s sabre team, meanwhile, were knocked out in the quarter-finals by South Korea, who won 45-25 at Hangzhou Dianzi University Gymnasium.

20km Race Walk
Another two early rises this morning were race walkers Chin Man-kit and Ching Siu-nga, who finished 10th and sixth in their respective races.
Chin crossed the line in 1:37:43 in the men’s race, with Ching coming home in 1:43:27 in the women’s event.
Chinese athletes dominated both races, with Zhang Jun (1:23:00) and Wang Zhaozhou (1:24:08) taking gold and silver in the men’s race, and Yang Jiayu (1:30:03) and Ma Zhenxia (1:30:04) mirroring that in a dramatic end to the women’s event.

Triathlon
Hong Kong’s Jason Ng fell just short in his bid to medal in the men’s triathlon, finishing fifth on Friday.
Ng came home in 1 hour, 53 minutes and 38 seconds in a race won at a canter by Japan’s Kenji Nener, who led from the start and completed the 1,500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run in 1:50:54, almost a full minute ahead of teammate Makoto Odakura (1:51:49).
“It is a pity, because I have trained really well in the past two months,” Ng told HOY TV. “I also had good running speed in training, but it is too hot today and the other athletes ran really strongly, I really couldn’t keep up.”
Kazakhstan’s Ayan Beisenbayev was third in 1:52:25, with China’s Li Mingxu coming home in 1:53:22, and Ng rounding out the top five.
Oscar Coggins, the other Hongkonger on the start line, did not make it past the swim, exiting the water in 12th position in 19:17 before withdrawing.
Table Tennis
Doo Hoi-kem and Zhu Chengzhu recovered from the disappointment of women’s singles round-of-16 defeats to book their doubles quarter-final spot with a thrilling come-from-behind win over South Koreans Lee Eun-hye and Yang Ha-eun.
Doo and Zhu trailed 2-0 but rallied to reel off three straight games for victory. They next play on Saturday afternoon. Lee Ho-ching and Li Chang-wan couldn’t join their compatriots in the last eight, falling to a 3-0 loss against the imperious Chinese duo of Sun Yingsha and Wang Manyu.
Wong Chun-ting survived a roller coaster men’s singles last-16 encounter with Maharu Yoshimura of Japan to claim a spot in Saturday’s quarter-finals. Wong slipped 3-2 behind, after taking control at 2-0, but regrouped to take the final two games 11-5, 11-7 and win the match 4-3.
Wong earlier teamed up with Ho Kwan-kit for a men’s doubles last-16, 3-1 success against Afzalkhon Mahmudov and Ubaydullo Sultanov of Tajikistan. The Hongkongers’ unenviable prize is a quarter-final against the Chinese pair of Fan Zhendong and Wang Chuqin, ranked second in the world for doubles, and one and two in the singles global rankings, respectively.
Doo, who has been battling an elbow injury, was beaten 4-1 by Chinese Taipei’s Chen Szu-yu in the women’s singles, while Zhu lost 4-0 to China’s Wang Yidi.
“[The elbow] hurt during the competition, but it was bearable,” Doo told HOY TV. “I felt a bit like I couldn’t fight back against my opponent today. I have faced [Chen] many times before, but it was very difficult every time – our playing style is fairly similar.”
Lam Siu-hang went down 4-0 to 2021 Olympic Games silver medallist Fan in the men’s singles round of 16.
Swimming
Hong Kong’s swimmers were back in action at the aquatics centre on Friday morning.
There was drama in the women’s 4x100 metres medley relay heats, when China posted the fastest time but were disqualified for a false start.
The Hong Kong team, with Siobhan Haughey rested, came second behind Singapore in their heat, enough to progress to Friday night’s final.
Hayden Kwan went through to the men’s 200 metres backstroke final after finishing second in his heat. Chan Tsz-chiu was seventh in his heat and bowed out.
Ng Yan-kin and Fong Ka-yu finished fourth and fifth respectively in their men’s 50 metres breaststroke heats on Friday, with Ng just missing out on a place in the final.
James Lau Kin-hei was also just short of a place in his final. He came fourth in his 200m butterfly heat, as did Nicholas Lim Zhaoguang in his.
