Hong Kong’s Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem are looking to swap their guaranteed mixed doubles bronze medals for another colour after reaching the semi-finals at the World Table Tennis Championships in Durban.

The duo were set to face top seeds Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha of China in the early hours of Friday (Hong Kong time) for a place in the final.

With no third-place match, they have already at least matched their bronze finishes at the 2015 and 2017 editions of the championships. Should they be forced to settle for that, they will have contributed half of the six mixed doubles world bronzes Hong Kong has collected in total.

Now the task is to see whether they can go a step or two better.

“The players have worked really hard and their performances have been excellent,” Zhang Rui, the Hong Kong women’s team coach said. “I am giving them full marks already.”
