Promising Hong Kong youngsters Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem are just one step away from a World Championships medal after an outstanding performance in Suzhou this morning.
The pair brushed aside Japanese opponents Koki Niwa and Sayaka Hirano 4-0 in their last-16 mixed doubles match and if they continue their winning form in tonight’s quarter-finals, they will be guaranteed a bronze medal.

But it was a day of mixed fortunes as Hong Kong’s leading mixed doubles pair, Jiang Tianyi and Lee Ho-ching, the number two seeds, went out.

Wong, 23, and Doo, 18, will face Pawel Fertikowski and Katarzyna Grzybowska of Poland for a place in the last four after their 11-7, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 win.
“The Japanese were not easy to handle but they could still overcome them which means the pair is full of confidence,” said head coach Chan Kong-wah.
“The Poles are on paper not as strong as the Japanese – but both Wong and Doo have to adjust their mentality without putting too much pressure on themselves.
“If they can come through again tonight, it will be a major morale boost – not only for the forthcoming Olympics qualification but also their future careers.”

Wong said the match against the Japanese was not as easy as the 4-0 scoreline suggested.
“We were down 5-1 in the second game but able to fight back and win,” said Wong. “If we lost that game, the whole situation would have changed.

“I still have to play the singles in the evening and hopefully I can recover in time for the mixed doubles.”
Doo thanked her partner for leading her all the way. “When I made some mistakes or suffered lapse of concentration, he was able to correct me as we communicated a lot during rallies,” she said.
“The atmosphere here always makes you feel tense which has affected my sleep, but fortunately my game has not been affected.”
Jiang and Lee, who combined to win a silver medal at last year’s Asian Games in Incheon, lost 4-1 to Steffen Mengel and Petrissa Solja of Germany.
“It was a disappointing result as the pair were our medal hopeful,” said coach Li Jing.

“Obviously they could not deliver their best today against the Europeans.
“Lee was doing fine, maintaining her normal standard, but Jiang failed to lived up to expectations, lacking the initiative and crumbling on crucial points on a number of occasions.
“He has to make deep reflection.”
China’s Xu Xin and Yang Ha-eun of South Korea, also made it to the quarter-finals after struggling through with a 4-2 win over their Russian opponents.
“We are the only international combination pair left and that has given us some pressure,” said Xu. “But we need this kind of tough encounter if we want to go further in the competition.”
