Hong Kong youngsters one win away from table tennis World Championships medal

Promising Hong Kong youngsters Wong Chun-ting and Doo Hoi-kem are just one step away from a World Championships medal after an outstanding performance in Suzhou this morning.

The pair brushed aside Japanese opponents Koki Niwa and Sayaka Hirano 4-0 in their last-16 mixed doubles match and if they continue their winning form in tonight’s quarter-finals, they will be guaranteed a bronze medal.

But it was a day of mixed fortunes as Hong Kong’s leading mixed doubles pair, Jiang Tianyi and Lee Ho-ching, the number two seeds, went out.

Wong, 23, and Doo, 18, will face Pawel Fertikowski and Katarzyna Grzybowska of Poland for a place in the last four after their 11-7, 11-8, 11-5, 11-6 win.
