Paris Olympics: Chinese Taipei boxer Lin Yu-ting ignores press after winning first bout
- Boxer involved in gender controversy beat Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova by a unanimous decision to reach women’s under-57kg quarter-finals
Boxers Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan’s Sitora Turdibekova gave international journalists the cold shoulder when they walked past the mixed zone without speaking after their bout on Friday.
Amid a boxing gender controversy that has hit the Games, Lin defeated Turdibekova by a unanimous decision to reach the women’s under-57kg category quarter-finals.
Neither boxer spoke to the press but Lin’s coach Tseng Tzu-chiang addressed a few media members after the fight at North Paris Arena.
“She controlled the bout well, I think that’s quite obvious,” he said. “[One judge awarded the first round to the opponent] but this is competition, we respected the calls and every rule.
“This is the first match so Lin was a little nervous, but we aim to enjoy the Games.”
