Saul “Canelo” Alvarez knocked out Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev in the 11th round of their bout in Las Vegas on Saturday night to claim the WBO light heavyweight crown in his debut at 175 pounds.

The Mexican is now a champion in four weight divisions, following Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Mike McCallum in making the jump from a junior middleweight world title to light heavyweight.

That 21-pound jump means Alvarez has to be in the conversation for best pound-for-pound fighter. That’s the view of Oscar De La Hoya, who called Alvarez “the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world today” in a post -fight interview.

“You can’t tell me Crawford or Lomachenko or anyone else in boxing is daring to be great like Canelo,” he added.

That’s the view of the new champion, too, as the 29-year-old vowed to make history.
