Various reports in mainland China suggest Sun’s No 9 jersey will be retired on December 6 – the day he turns 39 – by two Beijing teams he played for, when the Royal Fighters host the Ducks in the first city derby of the season.

Sun turned out for the Ducks from 2013 to 2017, and the Royal Fighters from 2019 until his retirement in 2021, aged 35.

The jersey retirement ceremony will be organised by the Royal Fighters, with the Ducks, where Sun won two CBA championships, co-hosting to honour their former player.

Standing at 6ft 9 inches (2.06 metres), the shooting guard also played for the Beijing Olympians at the start of his CBA career in 2003 but the team ceased to exist after billionaire tycoon owner Li Su died.

A two-time Asian Games gold medallist, Sun’s best CBA moments occurred during his four seasons with the Ducks, where he averaged 10.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 169 outings.
