After being hammered 105-63 by Serbia on Saturday in their opening game in Group B, China slumped to defeat against a country only formed in 2011 and playing in the tournament for the first time.

Sun, who played 10 games for the Los Angeles Lakers from 2008 to 2009, said he had been left bemused by the team’s “indifferent” approach in their 89-69 loss.

“Despite having the defensive tactics formulated, most of their three-point attempts were wide open, and even if our players were there, they were not disturbing their opponents at all,” he said.

The now-retired Sun, who won two Asian Games titles with China, said Monday’s defeat was never about tactics or techniques, but attitude.
