Kai Tak Sports Park will host its first test event this weekend, but who it involves or when it will take place is being kept secret by tight-lipped football bosses and close-mouthed officials in Hong Kong.
On Monday, Kevin Yeung Yun-hung, the secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, revealed a football match would take place at the city’s newest sporting venue on Sunday, with “around 1,000 people” in attendance.
Stadium officials, however, did not respond to a request for comment about the match at the complex’s smaller sports ground, a stance largely in keeping with their approach of not saying anything about the project since ground was broken in April 2019.
For its part, the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA), refused point-blank to reveal any details about Sunday’s game whatsoever.
What the governing body did do, was quietly update the fixture list on its website to reflect that a second division match between Sai Kung and Wong Tai Sin would take place there at 4.30pm. The encounter is listed as “by invitation only”.

In response to a request for comment, an HKFA spokesman said the following: “After the completion of the Kai Tak Sports Park, it will become the largest sports venue in Hong Kong. The Football Association has been maintaining close communication with the Sports Park and coordinating test match arrangements according to its needs.
