Athletes can make statements in lots of ways, one of them being atop their heads.

Exceptional, and exceptionally weird hairstyles, have long been a staple of the Olympics throughout the years, and here are five we have spotted at Tokyo 2020 so far.

Although she is now out of contention, Osaka was sporting some of her trademark colourful red box braids. Osaka also had the honour of lighting the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremony, in which she debuted a new hairstyle that closely resembled the colours of her birth nation’s flag – red with white strands woven throughout.
