Athletes can make statements in lots of ways, one of them being atop their heads.
Exceptional, and exceptionally weird hairstyles, have long been a staple of the Olympics throughout the years, and here are five we have spotted at Tokyo 2020 so far.
Naomi Osaka

Although she is now out of contention, Osaka was sporting some of her trademark colourful red box braids. Osaka also had the honour of lighting the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremony, in which she debuted a new hairstyle that closely resembled the colours of her birth nation’s flag – red with white strands woven throughout.
Courtney Hurley

American fencer Courtney Hurley has been rocking some various colours in Tokyo. Too bad fencers have to wear helmets that cover their heads when they compete.
Kiran Badloe

Netherlands’ Kiran Badloe channelled some “Last Airbender” and popular character Avatar Aang while competing in windsurfing.
“This haircut is a tribute to the one and only true wind master,” Badloe said in an Instagram post describing his cut.
“I hope the spirit of this great warrior gives me the power to sail well and use the wind in my favour. One day I dream of becoming a master of the wind myself, a true Airbender.”
And it is working as Badloe, the winner of the past three RS:X World Championships, is favourite to win the medal race in Tokyo on Saturday.
Ebrar Karakurt

Turkish volleyball player Ebrar Karakurt has gone with a pink mohawk variation for Tokyo 2020, and it seems to be working as Turkey upset China, the defending women’s champions, in straight sets to open the tournament.
A former member of Turkey’s under-18 women’s volleyball team, the 21-year-old hitter led the way with 18 points in her Olympics debut, with many netizens quick to point out her crafty athleticism as well as her distinctive pink hair.

The Aussie golfer is sporting what can only be called a glorious mullet with an accompanying moustache. He also shaved “AUS” into the side of his head, but it seems to have grown out quite quickly.
Fans were quick to praise the 27-year-old’s unique “patriotic” hairdo on social media, as the current world number 28 and Australia’s highest-ranked male golfer started the competition at the Kasumigaseki Country Club.
Megan Rapinoe

Last but not least is outspoken USA women’s team star Megan Rapinoe. She’s sporting her trademark purple died hair and scored the winning spot kick as the team beat the Netherlands on penalties to reach the semi-finals.
